Fortingall churchyard is the home of the Fortingall Yew Tree which is believed to be between 2000 - 5000 years old, making it one of the oldest known trees in Europe. Nearby Glen Lyon is perhaps Scotland's most beautiful glen as well as being the longest. There are fabulous walks along the glen and in the surrounding hills. At the far end of the glen lies the remote village of Bridge of Balgie (with shop/cafe), from there the road continues down to Loch Tay, famous for its water sports and ancient crannog on the loch.
Kenmore (6 miles) has grocery shops, golf course and a charming sandy beach for water sports and boat hire. There is pony trekking available at Mains of Taymouth stables and mountain biking available at Drummond Hill (2 miles). The bustling highland town of Aberfeldy (8 miles) has a distillery, cinema and leisure centre as well as many charming artisan shops and cafes.
Walkers and climbers will want to head for the central Highland's highest mountain Ben Lawers. It stands majestically at nearly 4,000 feet in the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. If you don't fancy tackling Ben Lawers itself, there are a variety of other walking routes suitable for all abilities nearby. To the north, you can drive over the hill to Tummel and Loch Rannoch, where, amid more glorious scenery Schiehallion, the Fairy Mountain, also awaits enthusiastic walkers.
Pitlochry (22 miles) has a famous year-round Festival Theatre, fish ladder, golf course and Scotland's smallest distillery, Edradour, while Blair Atholl (26 miles), is home to the fairy-tale Blair Castle, the award-winning 'Watermill' bakery, a golf course and, in August, hosts the International Blair Atholl Horse Trials.
